Located in the vibrant neighborhood of Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, Found Coffee is a place where stories are shared, connections are made, and a strong sense of community thrives. Owner Annie Choi, is a passionate entrepreneur with a background in the entertainment industry. Let’s dive into the journey of Annie Choi, the owner of Found Coffee, and explore how her passion for coffee, community, and AAPI heritage has shaped this beloved independent shop.
A Journey Fueled by Passion
Annie's journey from the entertainment industry to the coffee business began with a realization of her passion for creating spaces that bring people together.
Drawing inspiration from her parents' entrepreneurial spirit and her own experiences, Annie opened Found Coffee in February 2015. And from the very start, it became a place where people could find themselves and discover a sense of community.
What sets Found Coffee apart from other coffee shops in Los Angeles is its commitment to showcasing the best of California, from featuring local artists' work to sourcing coffee exclusively from California roasters.
Navigating Challenges and Embracing Community
Running a small business is challenging, and Found Coffee has had its share of obstacles. From equipment breakdowns to break-ins in the early years, Annie and her team have faced numerous hurdles.
The challenges have evolved, especially in the wake of the global pandemic. The hospitality industry experienced a significant shift, with many workers seeking opportunities outside the field. However, Found Coffee remains resilient, adapting to the changing landscape while staying true to its mission of bringing people together. The customers and regulars have shown immense love and support, solidifying Found Coffee's position as a beloved gathering place in the neighborhood.
Support Local Business
Found Coffee takes pride in supporting local, women and AAPI-owned businesses by curating a selection of retail products from these entrepreneurs. ‘My mission and vision for Found has been to carry mainly California-based vendors since I’m a born and raised Angeleno. Things have shifted over the years as I've discovered more female and AAPI (and Asian Canadian!) Californian small businesses that I've wanted to support and carry in my shop.’ Annie told us.
This dedication to local businesses not only enriches the Found Coffee experience but also contributes to the growth and empowerment of underrepresented groups in the community.
Words for young entrepreneurs
As Found Coffee celebrates its 8th anniversary, Annie reflects on her journey as an entrepreneur. She emphasizes the importance of rest and delegation for personal well-being and long-term business success. Annie's advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to remember to take time for themselves and trust others to share the responsibilities.
Found Coffee's story is a testament to the power of community, AAPI heritage, and the entrepreneurial spirit. It serves as an inspiration for young entrepreneurs to pursue their passions, create welcoming spaces, and foster connections within their communities.
